Brian Temple fills us in on his race at the Burnt Gin National Hare Scramble

By Brian Temple… SR A Class

It was a last minute decision to head south for the 2nd weekend in a row and race in South Carolina at the Burnt Gin National. I headed south on Saturday and it was pouring down rain in Kentucky, Tennessee and North Carolina. When we finally hit South Carolina the rains seemed to come to a stop and I was thinking this would be a good thing. We got checked in to the hotel and then the rain decided it would come on in. It rained and then it rained some more. Most of the time the rain doesn’t bother me at all as I normally do good in extreme weather and conditions but this much rain in sandy soil can mean there can be bottomless ruts that can swallow an entire bike. As night fall came there didn’t seem to be any let up on the rain and I figured the race was going to be a survival race.

Sunday morning came the rains had stopped and we headed to the track. As we arrived at the track, other than the normal water standing here and there, the road in and the parking didn’t look that bad. I was watching the morning riders and they seemed to be doing just fine getting around. Race time came and it was time to head to the line. It was cooler than normal for South Carolina so I was in no hurry to get to the line and sit. When I did finally get there my line was full of riders. It was the largest SR A row I had seen in a very ling time. There were past GNCC National Champions on the line and past Factory Pro Riders (retired) on the line as well. I would have to line up way to the left just to get on the line. Randy Hawkins would join me on the outside. I knew with all the competition I would have to ride very well to do good today.

They threw the yellow flag, I’m guessing a green flag couldn’t be found or they were telling the riders what to look forward to out there on the course…CAUTION! Everybody kicked their bikes to life, minus me, as mine decided to make me work harder and give everyone in the field a 100 yard head start. When she did finally decide to get out there and get in this fight I was off. Did I mention earlier that this was the largest field of SR A riders I had seen in years? With the start that I got I threw caution to the wind and dropped the hammer. I began to pick guys off the best that I could. The course was actually very good and there didn’t seem to be any bottomless ruts. I would catch a group of riders and slowly start working my way thru. When the course got in the woods it was very difficult to get by guys. Most guys aren’t willing to just “let you by” on the 1st lap of a race.

At the end of the 1st lap I had worked my way up to 11th place. This was not going to work. I had driven 8+ hours to get to the race and I would not be happy with an 11th place finish. As I started the 2nd lap I knew I need to pick up the pace. I would push hard and there were lines starting to open up in the woods sections to allow for better passing and faster times. The Cheapcycleparts.com KTM 350 was running like a champ and seemed to enjoy getting pushed to the limit. I made a couple of mistakes in the 2nd lap but as a whole a good lap. I would finish the lap and had worked my way up to 5th. I kept the hammer down and kept trying to make quick work of any riders I would catch. Lap after lap I would be in 5th. I figured the front 4 had pulled such a gap on me in the first 2 laps that it was going to be very difficult to make up another position. I kept the hammer down and my last lap was with in 5 seconds of my fastest lap of the day. I would end the day in 5th.

The track would end up getting very rough and had hundreds of multiple lines in the woods. Sometimes it was luck if you picked the fastest line. All in all not a bad day and I had a lot of fun. Casey Nelson, Randy Hawkins, Ivan Haynes and Robert Blalock were the top 4 guys in the SR A class. Congrats to them. It was the first 3 hour race of the year and my fitness was very good. My winter training program has been changed up a little and it seems to be working very well. My program and sponsors as a whole for 2012 are as good as they ever have been. With out all this support going south and racing as much as I have this year wouldn’t have happen with out them.

Report from a day of riding and racing the Broxton Bridge Enduro by Brian Temple

I had decided with Monday January 16th being a holiday (Martin Luther King Day) I would head south and hook up with Chris Bach, Ben Weathers and some of the other regulars from down south for a ride day on Saturday and a race day on Sunday at the Broxton Bridge Enduro in South Carolina. Cody Hardesty, a 250A rider from Louisville KY wanted to jump in on the fun so I picked him up in Louisville on Friday and we pointed the truck south … destination would be Columbia South Carolina.

We all met up on Saturday morning at the Palmetto MX Complex. Bach’s Beta for the 2012 racing season looks like a full on factory bike this year. I was very impressed with the overall detail. We rode some moto did some laps on the turn track and even hit all the trails before the day was done. All of us were tweaking the suspenders to try and get it dialed for the sand. The race on Sunday was about an hour south and the conditions were going to be very similar. We got our fill of riding and loaded about 3pm to head south to the track to get registered and grab a bite to eat.

Hutch May, Greg Reynolds, and Brian Temple during a reset at Broxton Bridge. Photo: Bolton's Chest

Sunday came and it was time to race. I have only raced 1 enduro in my life and it was last year at round 1 of the National Enduro Series and that’s where I broke my hand, tore some tendons. After that day I needed surgery and a long recovery that basically lasted all of 2011. My plan was to make sure I had a completely different kind of day. I had gotten some new FLY Racing Kinetic gear and was pretty pumped to have new gear and knew that I would at least look good even if I did race slow. There were 5 sections with 2 gas stops with what looked like to be about 75 miles of ground to cover.

The first section had good flow to it with a few fields. I eased in to my pace and carried good speed. It felt good to be back racing and the hand was doing good. The motor work that WMR did over the winter made the CheapcycleParts.com KTM 350 sing. The bike revs to the moon and pulls hard all the way thru. WP Racing USA had done the suspension work over the winter and it was working fantastic. I could not have been happier with the bike. Now it was time to see if my training was going to pay off. The second section was similar with just a couple of tight areas but had great flow.

The third section was going to be the longest of the day. I gassed up and headed to the start. I had only dropped 3 so far so I felt like I was having a pretty good day. When I got in to this section it had tightened up a lot. I was making one small mistake after another. The first gear handle tight sections were eating me up. I made the decision to actually slow down and try to smooth out to cut down on my mistakes. I have had a many a pros tell me that some times you need to slow down to go faster. I just couldn’t get in the groove in the slow tight stuff. When the check came I think I had dropped another 15 just in that section. Not what I was looking for but I wasn’t hurt, that’s important too.

In the bottom left of this photo you can see Temple putting the pass on Bolt-on....

The fourth and fifth section was more of the same. I did the best I could thru the tight sections but again I just couldn’t get in a good flow. The faster stuff I felt very strong. The race day would come to an end and I would drop a total of 33. As a whole I was happy with my riding. I don’t race many enduro’s so this type of racing is different for me. I have been training really hard and I was very happy with my fitness. I was able to push hard for the entire race. At the end of the day I would end up in 4th in the SR A class. More than that I will have to say that this was the most fun racing I have had in my life. I was lined up with Cody Hardesty, Greg Reynolds, Hutch May and Ben Weathers. These guys were a blast to ride with and talk to at all the resets. Jared Bolton was just a couple of rows in front of us and we caught him several times while he was playing with the brakes on his bike. The club that put the race on did an awesome job and it was as organized better than 90% of any race I have been to. The Broxton Bridge Enduro will be a regular stop for me!

Thanks to CheapcycleParts.com, FMF, FLY Racing, Clockwork KTM, Renthal, WP Racing USA, WMR, Nihilo Concepts, Motorex

Charlie Mullins Conquers Loretta Lynn GNCC to Capture First-Ever XC1 Championship - Andrew DeLong gets his first-ever XC2 win

Mullins dominated the race en route to clinching his first-ever XC1 Championship.

Hurricane Mills, TN (November 6, 2011) -The first-ever Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series double-header made for an exciting weekend of racing as Loretta Lynn’s Ranch hosted a record-setting total of nine races – beginning on Friday with day one of bike racing, ATV racing took place on Saturday and the grand finale of bike racing on Sunday. North Carolina’s Charlie Mullins added another page to the GNCC Racing history books by securing the 2011 XC1 Championship title after riding yet another flawless race on day two of the Parts Unlimited Loretta Lynn’s GNCC in Hurricane Mills, Tenn.

Rewinding to Friday, Mullins suffered a mechanical issue near the end of a race that he indisputably dominated, while Paul Whibley and Josh Strang closed the points gap on the American off-road racing star heading into Sunday’s finale. Mullins proved that he could handle the pressure, though, riding his way to claim his first-ever GNCC XC1 title. And to top it off, Mullins also won the $250 Motosport.com Holeshot Award at the start of the race.

Kailub Russell was looking for redemption from Friday's race and got it in the form of a 2nd-plae finish.

The win gave Mullins the XC1 title over New Zealand’s Paul Whibley, who won the title in 2009. In fact, Mullins is the first American to win the GNCC title since Rodney Smith held it in 2004, which demonstrates the wide-reaching scope of GNCC Racing. To put the significance of Mullins’ title in perspective, seven of the last 11 GNCC championships have been won by foreign riders, including the last five straight: Australia’s Shane Watts won it in 2000, Finland’s Juha Salminen held it from 2005 to 2006, David Knight from the Isle of Man was champ in 2007 and 2008, while New Zealand’s Paul Whibley and Australia’s Josh Strang claimed the titles in 2009 and 2010. To say the least, Mullins’ win was a popular one, especially since he’s been racing the series since he was a youth rider.

Paul Whibley ran up front early but struggled with suspension settings and ended up 3rd.

“It’s a dream come true,” said Mullins. “I’m really at a loss for words, right now. I’ve worked so hard and so many people have helped me along the way. There are so many people out there that helped make this happen and it feels really good to finally win it, it’s been a long time coming.”

“It’s been 10 years ago I was in the youth class, and it’s pretty cool to come up and be the champion,” added Mullins. “When I started racing it was just me and my dad and my uncle just coming out on the weekends, just spending time with the family and having a good time. I really never thought it would progress to this, it’s something I’ll always remember.”

Mullins put on an incredible display over the extremely rugged 12.5-mile course, while Kailub Russell, Cory Buttrick, Paul Whibley, and Josh Strang locked up in an intense battle for the runner-up position. Strang washed out on the loose rocky start, sending him to the back of the pack early on but the defending champion pushed his way to fourth, just behind Buttrick and Whibley. Unfortunately, Strang hit a set of tree roots that sent him to the ground and furthermore added to his string of bad luck in 2011, as the Aussie superstar’s day ended abruptly with a leg injury. JG Off-Road/GEICO Honda’s Jimmy Jarrett volunteered to end his day as well, along with XC2 racer Cody Gragg – who both stopped to assist the injured Strang in the woods.

Buttrick ran a solid second for the first half of the race after rolling off a season-best second place on Friday, but unfortunately Buttrick pulled out of the race with an injured hand. WMR Racing/Clockwork/Planet Fitness KTM’s Nate Kanney ran into mechanical issues in the final round of racing and the fifth place racer pulled off early on.

Australian Toby Price finishd 4th in XC1 in only his fourth GNCC race ever.

Russell took over second after his FMF/KTM teammate Buttrick dropped out and after that, the Pro class rookie never looked back – ending the race with nearly two minutes to spare over the seasoned Whibley.

“I was pretty upset on Friday because I threw second away twice,” said Russell. “Today I knew I could turn things around and I started off well, I was right behind Charlie and Paul after the start. Charlie made a little mistake and I got around him and then I hit a root and flipped over the bars and hit my head. It knocked me silly for a minute, but I got going and ended up catching everyone back and making the pass for second.”

Whibley, who won Friday’s round, wasn’t able to put in another win on the weekend, but the Kiwi managed second place in points after an arguably rough start to the 2011 season.

“The track was really rough today and we had a few set-up issues, the bike wasn’t working as good as it was Friday,” said Whibley. “But it’s good to finish the year where we did, considering the problems we had at the start of the season.”

Australian off-road star Toby Price finished fourth in just his second GNCC race of the season, while Jesse Robinson finished fifth, filling in on the factory Beta team for the injured Chris Bach.

Holeshot specialist Jedehiah Haines was sixth on a Kawasaki, beating out JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports Honda’s Scotty Watkins for the spot.

Meanwhile, 2010 National Trials Champion Cody Webb was eighth on another factory Beta.

Rounding out the top 10 were Kawasaki rider Eric Bailey and Kenny Gilbert on a KTM.

Andrew DeLong got his first-ever XC2 win on only his 2nd race on the FAR/Husqvarna.

Andrew DeLong claimed his first-ever XC2 victory after an epic battle with his FAR Husqvarna teammate Jason Thomas and Obermeyer Yamaha/Raines Riding University/OffroadViking.com’s Jordan Ashburn.

Ashburn took the early lead after grabbing the $100 Motosport.com Holeshot Award, however, DeLong and Thomas soon hooked up in a fierce duel that eventually carried them past Ashburn and into the lead.

For the next several laps, DeLong and Thomas traded the lead several times, with Thomas holding the upper hand going into the final lap. However, DeLong was not to be denied and made a spectacular pass just before the motocross track to take the win.

“It feels good to get this win under my belt,” said DeLong. “Jordan kind of checked out on us early, and then me and Jason started rolling and we just put the hammer down and caught him.”

Jason Thomas finished a close 2nd in XC2 while riding with plates and screws in his hand!

Thomas, who, remarkably, was riding with a plate and several screws in his hand after breaking it before the Ironman GNCC, held on for second with Ashburn taking third.

KTM’s Steward Baylor Jr., who wrapped up the XC2 title on Friday, finished fourth after drowning out his bike in one of the water crossings.

Obermeyer Yamaha/Raines Riding University/OffroadViking.com’s Morgan Moss was fifth, ahead of Yamaha riders AJ Stewart and Steven Squire.

Justin Bonita and Zack Nolan were eighth and ninth, respectively, both riding KTM’s, while JG Offroad/ GEICO Honda’s Rory Mead was 10th.

After graduating from the Youth ranks just last year, Fairmont, W. Va. racer Layne Michael turned in a herculean effort to finish ninth overall, earning him the honor of Top Amateur for the first time in his rookie season. Open A’s Adam Bonneur put up a good fight, though, contesting the young rider for that top honor throughout the three-hour race.

HURRICANE MILLS, Tenn. – KTM support rider Steward Baylor secured the GNCC XC2 Lites Championship at the fourteenth round of the GNCC Series held at the famous Loretta Lynn’s Ranch after earning 2nd overall in the afternoon race.

The 17 year- olds day did not start as well as it ended. Approximately 15 minutes before the start of his race, he discovered that his bike would not start. After trying different options he finally resorted to hopping on a friend’s bike and sped over to the start line. He made it to the line one minute before the flag drop without time to adjust suspension, bars or levers. Not letting the situation deter him, he jumped off the line in good position and was sitting inside the top five at the end of the first few corners.

“I was nervous to ride someone else’s bike because I wasn’t familiar with the set up or engine. I didn’t get the best start but I tried to just focus on remaining calm and finishing as well as I could to secure the championship,” remarked Baylor.

Baylor remained in 3rd position throughout the majority of the race until he turned it up in the final two laps. On lap six he moved into 2nd place and was able to hold that position for the final lap to clinch his first career XC2 Lites Championship.

The number one plate was awarded to Baylor by last year’s GNCC XC2 Lites Champion Kailub Russell. On the podium Baylor commented, “It feels really good to earn this championship. I have to give a special thanks to Allen Gravitt for allowing me to race his bike and to my parents, Bart Hayes, KTM, FMF and Fly. It is very rewarding to hold this number one plate and I can’t wait to represent it on Sunday’s race.”

“We are all very excited for and proud of Steward Baylor for his hard work this season and his first professional championship title. Baylor has performed at the top level all season winning a total of six races. He has the heart and determination to have a long career in this business and we hope this is the first of many championships,” remarked Factory FMF/KTM Race Team Manager Antti Kallonen.

Mullins inches closer to his first-ever GNCC XC1 Title as Baylor takes the win in XC2 and extends his points lead as well

Charlie Mullins controlled nearly the entire race from the front and extended his series points lead.

Crawfordsville, IN (October 23, 2011) - Charlie Mullins took a giant step towards winning his first GNCC title with an impressive victory at the Amsoil Ironman GNCC in Crawfordsville, Indiana – round 13 of the 2011 Can-Am Grand National Cross Series. The Ironman GNCC is historically known for it’s spectator-friendly obstacles and festive aura, usually serving as the final round of racing; but due to a previous rainout, the Ironman provided a penultimate round of exciting racing action in all classes, the finale taking place at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch November 4-6. Aside from racing action, there were a variety of special events taking place at the festive Ironman event and there’s no doubt the Crawfordsville locals witnessed a day of racing they will never forget.

Looking strong and confident on a challenging and deeply rutted course, Mullins took the lead at the end of the opening lap and after three hours of racing had increased his advantage to nearly 40 seconds. However, the FMF/KTM rider’s fifth win of the season didn’t come quite as easily as that, as Am-Pro/FMF Yamaha’s Paul Whibley kept things exciting by closing in on Mullins midway into the race. However, in the end, Mullins was able to pull away from the 2009 series champ and enjoyed a comfortable lead when he took the checkers at the finish.

With the win, Mullins now has a healthy 38-point lead in the series standings, which he will carry into the double-header finale at Loretta Lynn’s Ranch.

“It’s good to add to my lead, and it puts me a little closer to the championship,” said Mullins. “I just rode as hard as I could and things went my way.”

Whibley kept Mullins honest, closing within 10-seconds a few times but was docked a position for going outside 25-feet of the marked trail.

“I lost a few positions in a creek crossing on the opening lap and I dropped back to about fifth, but then I just put my head down and passed everybody on the backside and then put on a sprint and opened up a gap,” added Mullins. “Later on, I saw Whibley was coming, but I just held my pace and it worked out.”

Whibley crossed the finish line in second, but due to a rules infraction, the New Zealander was docked one position in the standings, promoting his Am Pro Yamaha teammate Thad DuVall up to second. The runner-up finish marked the second podium in a row for DuVall, who is starting to find his rhythm after getting off to a slow start to the season.

Meanwhile, Whibley rounded out the podium in third, capping off one of his best rides of the year.

Josh Strang turned in an amazing charge from the back of the pack to finish fourth, after the FMF Makita Suzuki rider broke a foot peg on the opening lap and had to return to the pits for repairs. Strang, the defending series champ, has had a series of bad luck since the summer break, but in this instance, the Aussie off-road star minimized the damage with an incredible effort.

Thad DuVall carried his momentum from a podium at Power Line Park to the Ironman, and ended up 2nd (due to Whibley's penalty) after running 3rd all day.

JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports Honda’s Jimmy Jarrett continues to turn in strong performances and ended the day in fifth after coming out on top of an intense battle with FMF/KTM’s Russell Bobbitt. Bobbitt held on for sixth, with JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports Honda’s Scotty Watkins finishing seventh.

Cory Buttrick ran a solid third for a good part of the day; however, the FMF/KTM rider ran out of gas midway into the race and spent the rest of the day working his way back into eighth.

Kawasaki rider Eric Bailey finished ninth, with 2010 Snowshoe GNCC winner Nate Kanney, taking 10th after running out of gas on his WMR Racing/Clockwork/Planet Fitness KTM.

Jedediah Haines kicked things off by winning the $250 Motosport.comHoleshot Award at the start of the race.

Kailub Russell, the winner of the previous round in Ohio – the Powerline GNCC – came into Crawfordsville hoping to add to his string of podium finishes, however, a mechanical issue kept the KTM rider in the pits for most of the race.

Steward Baylor battled with Jordan Ashburn the last half of the race to take the win in XC2.

Steward Baylor Jr. made a late-race pass on Jordan Ashburn and then held the Am Pro Yamaha rider at bay to take the win in the XC2 class, his sixth such finish of the year. Like Mullins in the XC1 class, Baylor is closing in on the XC2 title and the KTM rider now holds a commanding 52-point lead over Ashburn in the class standings.

Andrew DeLong, who inked a deal with FAR Husqvarna on the morning of the Ironman, turned in perhaps the surprise ride of the day by giving his new employer a podium finish, taking a solid third in his first race on a 250F.

JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports Honda’s Rory Mead edged Obermeyer Yamaha’s Morgan Moss for fourth, while FAR Husqvarna’s Jason Thomas managed to finish sixth with a broken hand.

Yamaha riders Steve Squire, Ryan Lojak, Cody Gragg and AJ Stewart rounded out the top 10. Gragg claimed the $100Motosport.com Holeshot Award at the start of the race.

Adam Bonneur was the top finishing “non pro” rider, with a solid 14th overall finish on a Kawasaki. Bonneur also took first in the Open A class.

For the second race in a row, Suzuki rider Mark Patterson claimed the overall win in the A.M. race, and topped the Masters A (50+) class in the process.

Randall Riggs (Yam) was second overall and second in the Masters A (50+) class, while David Fallas (KTM) was third overall and third in the Masters A (50+) class.

Maria Forsberg won the Women’s division, ahead of Ashley Crouch (Hon) and Hannah Otto (KTM). In two weeks, Forsberg will try her hand in the afternoon race at the Loretta Lynn GNCC.

In the Sportsman A class, Jordan Johns was first on a KTM, with Yamaha rider Brady Meyers second and KTM rider Cody Hardesty third.

In the Youth race, Austin Lee (KTM) finished first overall for the sixth time this year, and topped the Super Mini (12-13) class, as well. Michael Witkowski was second overall and second in the Super Mini (12-13) class, while Ryan Slopko was third overall and first in the Super Mini (14-15) class.

Anton Kerscher (Suz) won the 85 (14-15) division ahead of Yamaha riders Jarrett Stephenson and Daniel Lynch.

The 2011 Can-Am Grand National Cross Country Series heads to Hurricane Mills, Tennessee for the Parts Unlimited Loretta Lynn’s GNCC on November 4-6. For the first time in GNCC history, bike racing will take place on Friday, with ATV racing on Saturday and bike racing will take place again on Sunday – making up for two rain dates previously in the schedule. For more information, please visitwww.gnccracing.com.

Mullins and DuVall round out podium while Steward Baylor returns to winning ways in XC2

After leading portions of the last four GNCCs, KR finally put it all together to take a convincing win.

St. Clairsville, OH (October 9, 2011) -Making it look all too easy, FMF/KTM’s Kailub Russell claimed his first-ever XC1-class victory with a dominating performance at the ITP Powerline GNCC in St. Clairsville, Ohio – round 12 of the 2011 Can-Am Grand National Cross Series.

On a day when most of the focus centered on the two main contenders for the 2011 title, Russell put in a statement ride that served notice to the competition that his intention is to be a regular visitor to the center step of the podium. In his first season of XC1 competition, Russell has landed himself on the podium several times this year – finally getting a win over his veteran competition.

On a fast and slippery course – one that also had its share of treacherous mud holes and unforgiving hills – Russell passed FMF/KTM teammate Charlie Mullins on the opening lap when Mullins stalled his bike. After that, the two-time XC2 champ put the hammer down and began building a lead that stood at over a minute by the end of the three-hour race.

The victory not only marked the first-ever win for Russell in the XC1 class, but it was also the first win for the new KTM 350 XC-F, which Russell has been riding all year.

“I’ve been putting in a lot of hard work here lately, and I just want to win,” Russell said after the race. “I’m pretty disappointed with how the beginning of the year went, but I’ve turned it around and I want to finish off the season winning.”

Mullins ran second most of the race but got stuck on a hill on the last lap making the finish a bit too close for his comfort.

Second went to Mullins, who helped his championship hopes immensely with the finish – especially since his main rival, Josh Strang, finished fifth. After settling into a safe second behind Russell, Mullins maintained a healthy lead over a raging battle for third, featuring Strang and AmPro Racing Yamaha riders Paul Whibley and Thad DuVall, the three swapped positions throughout the three hour race.

On lap four, Mullins lost considerable ground when he got stuck on a nasty hill, but he managed to get going without losing a position and made it to the finish with a little over 10 seconds to spare to grab the runner-up finish.

“I made a few mistakes after the gas stop but I felt I rode pretty good overall,” said Mullins. “Kailub rode a good race and I didn’t really have much for him. I just did the best I could to keep it on two wheels, and luckily I did what I had to and finished ahead of the people I needed to.”

DuVall rounded out the podium, after fending off a last-turn pass attempt by Whibley. The West Virginia rider has steadily improved since the summer break and was extremely strong over the final lap of the race.

DuVall took advantage of last-lap mistakes by Whibley and Strang to move into 3rd, and collided with his teammate Whibley in the last turn to take the final podium spot.

Whibley, who took the $250 Motosport.com Holeshot Award at the start of the race, held on for fourth, but collapsed after crossing the finish line, obviously in pain from the collision he had with DuVall at the finish.

Fifth place went to Strang, the FMF/Makita Suzuki rider losing valuable points to Mullins in the championship battle, and with only three races remaining on the schedule, the defending series champ sits a full 26 points behind Mullins.

JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports Honda’s Jimmy Jarrett turned in a solid ride for sixth, beating out eight-time National Enduro Champ Michael Lafferty (Hsb) and Nate Kanney on WMR Racing/Clockwork/Planet Fitness KTM.

Beta rider Jesse Robinson finished ninth, while JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports Honda’s Scotty Watkins rounded out the top 10 in his first ride in the XC1 class this year.

Steward Baylor Jr. got back on track in the XC2 class with an impressive flag-to-flag win after grabbing the $100 Motosport.com Holeshot Award to start the race. The KTM rider was in contention for the overall during the early going and finished off the XC2 race a full two minutes ahead of second place finisher Jordan Ashburn on the Am-Pro/FMF/Yamaha YZ250F.

FAR Husqvarna’s Jason Thomas rounded out the podium and maintains second place in the series standings, 38 points behind Baylor.

Fourth went to JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports Honda’s Rory Mead, who dropped back from the XC1 class for this race.

Meanwhile, Pennsylvania KTM rider Andrew DeLong finished fifth, ahead of Morgan Moss, who rode in third place for a good portion of the race on a 2012 YZ250F for Obermeyer Yamaha.

Pennsylvania KTM rider Nick Davis matched his best finish of the year with a seventh, while Yamaha riders AJ Stewart, Steven Squire and Ryan Lojak rounded out the top 10.

Scott Grills was the top finishing “non pro” rider, with a solid 17th overall finish on a Kawasaki. Grills also topped the competitive four-stroke A Lites class.

In the A.M. race, Masters A (50+) winner Mark Patterson took the overall win on a Suzuki, with Women’s class winner Maria Forsberg taking second overall on a KTM. Third overall and first in the 200 C Schoolboy (12-15) class was Dalton Cross on a KTM.

Brandon Higgins (Yam) beat fellow West Virginian Doug Blackwell (Hon) to win the Sportsman A class.

In the Youth race, Anthony Stone (KTM) grabbed his first overall win of the year, topping Levi Keller (KTM) and Austin Lee (KTM) for the honors. Stone also beat out Keller for first in the Super Mini (14-15) division, while Lee took the win in the Super Mini (12-13) class.

In the 85 (14-15) class, Brandon Ghearing took the win on a KTM, beating out Honda rider Joshua Borland.

MATTHEWS, Indiana – FMF/KTM rider Russell Bobbitt secured his fourth AMA National Enduro Championship with a win over teammate Charlie Mullins at the final round of the 2011 AMA National Enduro Series.

Leading up to the final round of the series, Mullins was leading Bobbitt by one point in the championship chase. Both riders came into today knowing that no matter what place they finished whoever beat the other would be crowned the series champion. Both riders suited up and the FMF/KTM Team battled for the championship.

Bobbitt came out swinging taking a convincing win in the first test section. He beat Mullins time by 13 seconds at the first marker. The second test of the day caused some confusion for some riders including Bobbitt and Mullins and the times were later thrown out. Bobbitt continued to thrive from his first test section win and won the remainder of the test seconds to take the overall win for the day and his fourth championship title. Mullins held strong to secure 2nd overall while Husaberg rider Mike Lafferty finished 3rd.

“It was a great race to win because it was a long year and a tough season. My injury halfway through the season really set me back. I have healed over the past few weeks and was excited to come back and fight for the win. I felt good all day and everything just clicked. My bike worked really well. Thanks to my mechanic Tanner, my friend Andrew Marsh, my family and the whole FMF/KTM Team for helping me earn this championship,” remarked Bobbitt.

Mullins, although disappointed he did not win the championship, congratulated his teammate on his win, and stated, “I gave it everything I had today. All you can do is your best and that is what I gave today. I am really excited for the team and Russell and know that I will need to fight harder for the championship next year.”

Mullins took his fourth win of the year and extended his points lead.

Somerset, Pa. (September 25, 2011) - Charlie Mullins claimed his second win in a row and fourth of the year with an impressive runaway performance at the VP Racing Fuels Mountain Ridge GNCC in Somerset, Pennsylvania on Sunday.

After the start, the 11th round of the 2011 Can-Am Grand National Cross Series appeared to be a five-man affair as Mullins battled with his FMF/KTM teammate Kailub Russell, FMF/Makita Suzuki’s Josh Strang, WMR Racing/Clockwork/Planet Fitness KTM’s Nate Kanney and Am Pro Racing/FMF Yamaha’s Paul Whibley. However, heading into the second lap, Mullins, Russell and Strang made a break from the pack – with Russell holding the upper hand.

Near the halfway point of the race, Mullins took the lead from Russell and then later pulled a considerable gap when Russell took a hard fall in the rocks. After that, it was all Mullins, as the Ohio rider decided it was time to check out.

After battling for the lead with Mullins and Russell for four laps, Strang had to stop in the pits with rear brake issues dropping himself back to 5th before finishing 3rd.

“Me, Kailub and Strang had our own little battle going,” said Mullins. “One of us would fall down and someone else would get the lead, and it was kind of like that for most of the day. But I kind of broke away during the next-to-last lap and I came through the barrels and looked back and I didn’t see anyone so I figured I had a good lead so I just dropped my head and was pushing pretty hard… I didn’t take any chances but I rode hard.”

Indeed, Mullins rode hard enough to extend his lead to nearly a minute and a half by the end of the race.

But while Mullins rode solo out front, a wild battle for second took place further back between Kanney, Strang (who was battling issues with his rear brakes) and Whibley. Kanney had managed to put himself in the runner-up position by the final lap, but gave way to Whibley a few turns from the finish when Whibley came barging through on the inside line in what he admitted later was a “forceful pass”. Kanney was having nothing of it and tried to retaliate heading into the turn leading into the finish, but the New York rider carried too much speed into the corner and slid into the banners, leaving Whibley a clear path to second and allowing Strang to slip by for third.

The last few turns were very dramatic as Whibley and Kanney were quite aggressive before Kanney slid out making a pass.

Kanney rebounded for fourth, while Russell limped in for fifth, still feeling the effects of his crash.

Eight-time National Enduro Champion Michael Lafferty rode a 250 two-stroke Husaberg to a sixth place finish, beating JG Off-road/GEICO Powersports Honda’s Rory Mead by nearly seven minutes.

Jedediah Haines was eighth on a Kawasaki, while XC2 competitor Jesse Robinson made the jump to the XC1 class to finish ninth on Chris Bach’s factory Beta, while Bach recovers from knee surgery.

In the meantime, Eric Bailey finished 10thon a Kawasaki.

With the win, Mullins extended his lead in the series standings to 17 points over Strang, while Whibley, who also won the $250 Motosport.comHoleshot Award to start the race, sits third in the standings another eight points back.

Ashburn, Delong, and Thomas on the XC2 podium.

Obermeyer/Am-Pro/FMF/Yamaha’s Jordan Ashburn claimed his third win in a row in the XC2 class, edging Pennsylvania KTM rider Andrew DeLong by nearly three seconds.

FAR Husqvarna’s Jason Thomas, who led the race until hitting a stump in the grass, rounded out the podium in third.

New Hampshire KTM rider Jake Korn made his first GNCC of the year a memorable one with a fourth place finish, while series points leader Steward Baylor Jr. finished fifth, losing a bit of ground in the standings to Thomas and Ashburn.

Sixth place went to Yamaha rider Ryan Lojak, while Nick Davis (KTM), Morgan Moss (Hsq), AJ Stewart (Yam) and Steven Squire (Yam) rounded out the top 10.

Cody Gragg, who won the $100Motosport.com Holeshot Award, finished 14th.

WMR Racing/Clockwork/Planet Fitness KTM rider Christopher Douglas turned in an impressive race to claim the top “non-pro” honors with a solid 13thoverall finish and first in the Open A division.

In the A.M. race, Randall Riggs took the overall win and first in the Masters A (50+) class on a Yamaha. Meanwhile, KTM’s Maria Forsberg finished second overall and wrapped up the Women’s title with her eighth class win of the year. Third overall went to KTM rider Dalton Cross, who also claimed the win in the 200 C Schoolboy (12-15) class.

In the Youth race, Levi Keller and Anthony Stone battled back and forth for the entire distance of the race with Keller getting the upper hand at the finish to claim his third overall victory of the year and fifth class win of the year in the Super Mini (14-15) division. Stone was second overall and second in the Super Mini (14-15), while third overall and first in the Super Mini (12-13) went to Austin Lee.

Ontario, CA (September 17, 2011) – The 2011 GEICO AMA EnduroCross series, presented by Lucas Oil made a first time stop at the Citizens Business Bank Arena in Ontario, California and KTM’s Taddy Blazusiak took the win in front of a large, enthusiastic crowd. Lucas Oil backed Colton Haaker took second ahead of factory Beta backed Cody Webb. Kyle Redmond finished fourth and Geoff Aaron finished fifth.

The afternoon got started with the 30 Expert riders doing a single lap against the clock running in reverse order of the current point standings to determine gate picks for the heat races. There is a lot of bragging rights on the line and Blazusiak was the final rider to take the track and set the fast time ahead of Mike Brown and Haaker.

Blazusiak, Brown and Aaron each won their heat races to take the best gate picks for the main event. Wally Palmer was among the top riders not make the main after a nasty tumble during his heat race. Jacob Argubright, Kevin Rookstool, Ryan Sandoval and Matt Oppen were among the other riders to miss the cut for the main event.

Colton Haaker was second.

Blazusiak jumped to the front of the field at the start followed closely by Aaron and Haaker. Aaron stalled his bike on the first lap and then Haaker immediately closed in on Blazusiak and stayed close for the first half of the race before slowly losing touch. Redmond, Gary Sutherlin and Webb were equally close to Haaker and it appeared that any one of them could have taken second before Haaker started to pull a little gap. Sutherlin made a mistake to fall from contention and Webb applied pressure to Redmond to finally make the pass just before the white flag; taking the final podium spot. Aaron managed to work his way back up to fifth ahead of Monster Kawasaki’s Justin Soule. Sutherlin held on for sixth ahead of Brown, who had a pretty tough main event and lost a lot of ground to Taddy in the championship after coming into this event in second. Keith Sweeten, the youngster from Oregon finished ninth ahead of Destry Abbott and Rory Sullivan, who is a very accomplished Motocross and Off Road rider made his first main event after three years of trying finished 11th after a big crash in the rocks.

In addition to the Expert class, EnduroCross events include Open Amateur, Vet 35+ and TrialsCross classes. The top two finishers in each class also earn a spot in the Vegas Grand Championship Finals for each respective class. The Vet class was won by Todd Sciaqua over Kurt Nicoll and Baja Legend Johnny Campbell. The Amateur class was won by Eric Rhoten with Matt Crouch and Max Gerston rounding out the podium. The TrialsCross class had an amazing finish with Andrew Oldar making a last second pass on Mike Damm that ended with both of them crashing as they crossed the finish line. Twelve year old Ty Cullins took third.

Sequatchie, TN (August 28, 2011) – Tennessee native Mike Brown outlasted a tough field of over fifty riders to win the KENDA Tennessee Knockout, fueled by Monster Energy. The first time “American Extreme Enduro” lived up to its billing as a tough race as Brown noted at the finish that the 40 minute long main event “Was tougher than anything I have ever done. At the halfway mark, I thought I would not be able to finish but I was leading so I kept pushing”. Cody Webb, the factory Beta rider and 2010 AMA Trials champion that has become a regular podium finisher in EnduroCross events finished second and was within striking distance of Brown on the final lap before stalling his bike. Bobby Prochnau, the super tough Canadian KTM rider finished third.

Taddy Blazusiak, the pre-race favorite was eliminated from the competition during the first Knockout round when a minor crash knocked the fuel injection system loose and forced him to pull out of the event. Blazusiak was a good sport though and stuck around all afternoon to cheer on the other riders.

The four round format started with a single timed lap on a very extreme “short” course that took Cody Webb three minutes and twenty five seconds to complete. Brown was just two seconds behind and GEICO Honda’s Kyle Redmond was another four seconds back. This set the starting order for the 50 riders that would go into Knockout round one with the fastest riders going first and getting the advantage of less dust but also the disadvantage of having to pick the lines for the first time on the ten mile “long” loop.

Brown showed his strength on the long loop with a 39 minute and 7 second time that set the standard. Webb was very close with a 39:25 lap and Prochnau came in with 39:56. Kyle Redmond was fourth at 40:59 and Am-Pro Yamaha’s Jordan Ashburn at 41:41. Paul Whibley was next in line followed by Colton Haaker, Rory Mead, Michael Williams and Dustin Gibson rounded out the top ten riders.

A total of twenty five riders moved forward to Knockout round two, which was a head to head race with five riders each in five groups. The top two riders in each group would move on to the ten rider final. Brown and Whibley qualified from group one. Webb and Haaker qualified out of group two. Prochnau and Mead qualified out of group three. Williams and Redmond qualified out of group four and Ashburn and Palmer qualified out of group five. Husqvarna’s Jamie Lanza and Ryan Sandoval were among the non-qualifiers along with GEICO Honda’s Scott Watkins and Kawasaki rider, Gary Sutherlin.

Brown rocketed to the front of the pack at the start of the ten lap main event while Webb found himself on the ground in the first turn. Prochnau ran second followed by Whibley while Colton Haaker and Rory Mead battled for forth. Webb moved past four other riders on the first lap, which took around four minutes. Michael Williamson, a relatively unknown Tennessee based rider that turned heads all day with his speed unfortunately crashed after not making it up an extremely difficult alternate line up the side of a cliff and dropped out on the first lap. Brown pulled a few seconds gap and rode conservative lines while several riders battled for second. Webb finally got to second at the halfway point and began to reel Brown in. By then, Haaker had taken a tumble with an aggressive line on a downhill to take him out of contention. Whibley had a chain derail on his YZ250 2-stroke on lap five and lost a few positions. After nearly 40 minutes of racing, Webb moved to within striking distance of Brown on the final lap but stalled and tipped over to provide the gap that Brown needed to take the victory. Rory Mead had also closed in on Prochnau but slid out in a turn while trying to take the final podium spot. Whibley climbed back up to fifth after battling with an impressive Ashburn. Redmond and Palmer were the final two finishers in seventh and eighth.
