The Vesrah Offroad Team of Scott Daubert and Joe Vadeboncoeur took on The Perry Mountain 24hr Challenge in Maplesville Alabama. The Perry Mountain Challenge is one of the few 24hr races in the USA. The race features classes for 6 man teams, Duo teams and Ironman solo efforts. The Vesrah Offroad team competed in the Duo class, and comes home with a 1 st place Duo team plaque. In addition, out of the 108 team entries the Vesrah Offroad team finished 7 th overall, beating many 6 man teams.
The course was very GNCC like in that it was fast through the woods and included a fun grass track section and a complete outdoor MX track. Also very GNCC like was the fact that it became very rough late in the race. But, the heat of Alabama and the 24hour aspect make this race all the more difficult.
“We knew from last year that we needed to conserve for this event”, said Scott “Perry Mountain is not like a GNCC race. Those races are sprints and in this race any extra effort you put out in the
daylight hours, you pay for at night.”
Scott started the team out with the first leg, taking home the holeshot. The team settled into 2nd place for most of the daylight hours, taking over the lead at about 2am and never relinquishing that position all the way to the finish at 10am. The team had a strategy of 3 laps per rider in the daylight hours and then switching to 2 laps per rider in the nighttime hours. That strategy proved to be perfect for this event.
“This race is all about the night time.” Said Joe, “We do not get to race at night, and you never know how your body will respond in the wee hours of the morning, after racing all day. I think we were the better prepared team this year, with a full crew, an RV, fantastic lights etc…”
